The lay of the land
The streets read like a forest until you notice the houses. Mature beeches and Japanese maples cover most of the residential blocks, which is why Madrona is one of the only neighborhoods in the city where you can walk a full mile in summer without stepping into direct sun.
The commercial spine is short — six blocks of 34th Avenue — and that's by design. Madrona Park has the only sand beach within walking distance of downtown.
